Hiking

Follow the water, and you’ll find the way.

Twelve hamlets form a chain of living landscapes around Lake Jølstravatnet. From there, paths lead through forests, trails wind through heather, and wooden walkways cross the rivers. Past the summer farms, the trails narrow to tracks. Someone has walked here before you. Perhaps sheep? Perhaps deer? As you move toward the high mountains, red markings appear among the boulder fields. Woodsmen and mountain folk left signs in the stones for you. And so you find your way through the scree toward the cairn and the view: the glacier to the east, the sea to the west.

Lake Jølstravatnet stretches like a blue spring through the village. If you walk, cycle or paddle along the shores, you will see how the oldest houses turn their gables towards you, as if welcoming you.

We built them this way. We grew accustomed to the beauty. And so, we remained.

As the Earth revolves around the sun and itself, the landscape changes with the seasons and with the light.

Even though everything is the same, it is new. Every morning. Every evening.

If you follow the water, you will find the way. To the valley, to the mountains, to the top.

We’re happy to show you. Maps and trails, tips for your journey. Our place is your place. Your time is now.
